Makito Shibuya
Composer / Executive Director, WAON General Incorporated Association

Born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, in 1976, Makito Shibuya graduated from Miyagi University of Education. Rooted in the tradition of Western classical music, he creates original stage works that bring together Japanese traditional performing arts, contemporary music, and movement. Alongside his artistic career, he teaches music at a private secondary school in Tokyo.

His compositions range from piano, chamber, choral, and orchestral works to large-scale collaborative productions with Noh theatre, shakuhachi, biwa, koto, shō, taiko, and Ryukyuan music. His creative practice is centered on reinterpreting the spiritual values and aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese culture through contemporary performing arts.

Shibuya has collaborated extensively with distinguished artists in both traditional and contemporary performance, including Noh master Reijiro Tsumura (Kanze School) and choreographer Kaiji Moriyama. His major stage works include Rain Won’t Defeat Me, inspired by the poetry of Kenji Miyazawa; Shuri, created as a tribute to the reconstruction of Shuri Castle; KI-MON, which reexamines the meaning of the oni (demon) in contemporary society; and Suien Kakyō, inspired by Kūkai and Yoichi Hatta, exploring the spiritual connections between Japan and Taiwan.

Committed to presenting Japanese culture on the international stage, he has performed TORUS, a work integrating Noh theatre, Japanese traditional instruments, and Western classical music, at the Festival de Musique Ancienne de Besançon, the Copenhagen World Music Festival, and the crypt of La Sagrada Família in Barcelona.

In recent years, international collaborative productions have become the focus of his artistic activities. Through long-term collaborations with musicians and artists in Taiwan, he has composed, arranged, and produced new works that foster cultural dialogue between Japan and Taiwan. In 2025, he served as Original Concept Creator, Composer, and Music Director for Suien Kakyō, presented as part of Onkyō Kūkan at the historic Sakai Noh Theatre. Inspired by Kūkai and Yoichi Hatta, the work explored the spiritual and cultural ties connecting Japan and Taiwan across time.

In 2026, he led the international collaborative tour “Japanese Spirit and Western Expression” as Executive Producer, Music Director, and Composer, presenting performances in Prague, Czech Republic, and Wrocław, Kraków, and Warsaw, Poland. Working in collaboration with cultural institutions including HAMU – Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology in Poland, he premiered two new original works, Those Enchanted by the Light Between Worlds and At the Open Gate. In addition to the performances, he gave lectures and workshops at universities and the Embassy of Japan, furthering artistic creation and international cultural exchange rooted in Japanese culture.

Shibuya also composed the score for Dressing the Fleeting Moment, directed by Nagaru Miyake, an Official Selection of the 41st Montreal International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA).

His works have been performed throughout Europe, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. As Executive Director of WAON General Incorporated Association, he continues to promote international cultural exchange through music and traditional Japanese performing arts while supporting educational initiatives for future generations.

Rather than simply introducing Japanese culture to the world, Makito Shibuya seeks to create new performing arts through dialogue between Japanese cultural traditions and the diverse cultures of the world. By reinterpreting the spiritual values and aesthetic principles of Japan in contemporary forms, he aims to build bridges across cultures, generations, and histories through composition, international collaboration, and education.

渋谷牧人

1976年、宮城県仙台市生まれ。宮城教育大学卒業。クラシック音楽を基盤としながら、日本の伝統芸能や身体表現を融合した舞台作品を創作する作曲家。東京都内の私立中高一貫校にて音楽教育にも携わる。

ピアノ曲、室内楽、合唱曲、オーケストラ作品をはじめ、近年は能、琵琶、尺八、箏、笙、和太鼓、琉球音楽など、日本の伝統芸能との共同制作を数多く手掛ける。日本文化が育んできた精神性や美意識を現代の舞台芸術として再構築し、新たな表現へと昇華することを創作の大きなテーマとしている。

観世流シテ方能楽師・津村禮次郎、舞踊家・森山開次をはじめ、伝統芸能・舞踊・クラシック音楽の第一線で活躍する芸術家との共同制作を重ね、宮沢賢治を題材とした《雨ニモマケズ》、首里城復興への祈りを込めた《首里》、現代社会における「鬼」の存在を問い直した創作舞劇《鬼問》、弘法大師・空海と八田與一を通して日本と台湾を結ぶ精神文化を描いた《水縁架橋》など、能と現代音楽を融合した舞台作品を発表している。

また、日本文化を世界へ発信する活動にも積極的に取り組み、ブザンソン国際古楽音楽祭、コペンハーゲン・ワールドミュージックフェスティバルでは、能と和楽器、西洋音楽を融合した作品《環（TORUS）》を発表。さらにスペイン・バルセロナのサグラダ・ファミリア地下聖堂において同作品を上演するなど、日本文化を題材とした舞台芸術を国内外で発信してきた。

近年は、日本文化を基盤とした国際共同制作を創作活動の中心に据え、海外の演奏家や芸術家との協働を通して、新たな舞台芸術の創造に取り組んでいる。台湾では演奏家への作曲・編曲や共同制作を継続的に行い、日本と台湾を結ぶ文化交流事業にも積極的に参加している。

2026年にはチェコ・プラハ、ポーランド・ヴロツワフ、クラクフ、ワルシャワを巡る国際共同制作ツアー “Japanese Spirit and Western Expression” を制作総指揮・音楽監督・作曲家として実施。チェコの国立芸術大学HAMUやポーランドのManggha Museumをはじめとする文化機関と連携し、新作《あはひの光に魅せられしもの》《At the Open Gate》を発表した。公演に加え、大学や大使館での講演・ワークショップも行い、日本文化を軸とした創作と国際文化交流を推進している。

また、第41回モントリオール国際芸術映画祭オフィシャルセレクション作品となった、三宅流監督によるドキュメンタリー映画『うつろいの時をまとう』の音楽を担当するなど、映像作品への楽曲提供も行っている。

作品はヨーロッパ、台湾、東南アジア、中東など国内外で演奏されるほか、一般社団法人「和音」の専務理事として国際文化交流事業を推進し、日本台湾文化芸術交流会顧問も務める。

日本文化を単に紹介するのではなく、その精神性や美意識を現代の舞台芸術として再構築し、異なる文化や歴史との対話を通じて新たな価値を創造することを創作理念としている。作曲活動に加え、国際共同制作や教育活動を通して、日本文化を礎とした文化交流の可能性を国内外へ発信し続けている。
